The Wetmore family in America, which has included a number of prominent figures and many eminent clergymen, stems from an
ancestor who came to New York in 1635. Robert Hodge Wetmore (1818-1897) and his wife, Anna Proven (Paul) Wetmore (1829-1894)
came to California from their home in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Frederick R. Wetmore, one of the sons by a previous marriage,
had come to California and established himself and his family on the "Brookside" farm, near Santa Rosa. He was followed by
various half brothers and their parents. For a time, Henry D. and William B. Wetmore managed the family apple orchard, "Annapolis",
near Stewart's Point, Sonoma Co., and developed extensive drying operations for their crops when shipping otherwise proved
unfeasible.
About 1886, John Griffeth Wetmore, with his brothers Henry D. (b.1885) and William Brown (b.1861), established Wetmore Brothers,
produce and commission merchants in San Francisco, dealing mainly in dried and fresh fruits, particularly bananas. His younger
brother, Robert Hodge, Jr. (1863-1941) was later associated with the firm. Two other brothers, George Peabody (b.1870) and
Carles Abbot Wetmore (b.1867) were associated in several ventures in San Francisco.
